Should you pay extra to have your tires inflated with Nitrogen? I wouldn't. Why not? Because the whole pitch is pretty much splitting hairs if you ask me. The people who advocate Nitrogen are quick to point out that tires filled with the stuff don't lose pressure like tires filled with air.
Really? Consumer reports pretty much proved that is simply not true with their 1 year test of 30 sets of tires. Half of the tires were filled with air and the other half were filled with Nitrogen and the Nitrogen tires did lose pressure right along side with the tires filled with air.
Nitrogen Inflation System
I align cars everyday in my shop and the first thing I do is check the tires inflation before I do any alignment work to the vehicle and the tires filled with Nitrogen are just as low as the tires filled with air from what I see on a regular basis in my shop.
To be accurate the Nitrogen filled tires lost about 1 pound less than the tires fill with air in the Consumer Reports test. They still lost pressure which means you still have to check them every month. Next the Nitrogen Nazi's like to say "well it won't rust the wheel like air".
I've personally dismounted and mounted thousands of tires and just haven't seen that to be an issue. The tires will run cooler" The fact is they will only run cooler if they are properly inflated. Nitrogen pretty much is all about splitting hairs if you ask me. Yes, maybe it's worth it if you have something like the space shuttle. Then yes, sign me up.
But if you're driving any kind of street car, I would just use good old fashioned air. Besides, it's about 70 percent Nitrogen and it's still free for the most part.
